At Coggeshall Eye Centre, we use Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to obtain detailed images of the structures inside your eyes. This advanced imaging technology helps our optometrists assess eye health and identify changes that may not be visible during a routine examination.
What is an OCT scan?
OCT stands for Optical Coherence Tomography. It is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses light waves to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the retina and optic nerve.
Unlike a conventional examination, which allows the optometrist to view the surface of the retina, OCT enables us to examine its individual layers in much greater detail.
The scan can assist in the detection and monitoring of several eye conditions, including:
- Glaucoma
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Other conditions affecting the retina and optic nerve
Is an OCT scan uncomfortable?
Not at all. An OCT scan is quick, painless and non-invasive. There is no contact with the eye, and the scan usually takes just a few seconds for each eye.
Why might I need an OCT scan?
OCT imaging provides valuable information about the health of your eyes, even when your vision appears normal.
An initial scan can establish baseline measurements of your retina and optic nerve. These images can then be compared with future scans, allowing us to identify subtle changes over time that might not be apparent through a conventional examination alone.
This is particularly useful when monitoring conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, where early changes can occur before noticeable symptoms develop.
Early identification of changes allows your optometrist to investigate further, discuss appropriate management and arrange referral to an eye specialist when necessary.
Is there a charge for an OCT scan?
An OCT scan is included at no additional charge with all private eye examinations at Coggeshall Eye Centre.
For NHS patients, OCT imaging is available for an additional charge, as it is not included in a standard NHS eye examination.
Please contact the practice if you would like further information about OCT imaging or the cost of a scan.
